About
Conditions I Treat:
Vocal Cord Disorders
Diseases of the larynx (vocal cords) can be caused by several processes including vocal cord dysfunction, laryngopharyngeal (acid) reflux, muscle tension, neurological disease, or vocal cord paralysis.
Vocal Cord Masses
Vocal cord nodules, polyps, and granulomas are benign lesions that can cause hoarseness, throat clearing, cough and trouble swallowing. Vocal cord masses can also be cancerous and require immediate attention.
Swallowing Dysfunction
Aspiration is when food or liquids go down the breathing passageway instead of the food passageway.
Complex Airway Disorders
The trachea (windpipe) and other parts of the adult breathing passages can become obstructed/blocked (tracheal stenosis) from previous surgery, trauma, or tumors in the head and neck. This complex set of diseases can be treated through a variety of surgical approaches and reconstructive techniques.
Zenker’s Diverticulum
An abnormal pouch alongside the esophagus. Often, this pouch fills with liquid or food that can regurgitate into the throat, resulting in swallowing difficulties or aspiration.
Professional Voice
Singers, teachers, actors, ministers, and others who use their voice professionally on a regular basis may suffer from an assortment of vocal cord pathology and can benefit from state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques, voice therapy, or other treatments.
My Practice:
I’m proud to join UTHSC from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where I completed my fellowship in Laryngology (study of the voice box). I received my Medical Degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and was then accepted into the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital – Department of Otolaryngology where I completed my internship and residency training.
I’m excited about my role at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center as Assistant Professor and Director of the Division of Laryngology. I’m passionate about creating an awareness for vocal hygiene and prevention in the Memphis community and providing state of the art care in this field.
My areas of expertise include the full spectrum of disorders of the voice which range from management of the professional voice, treatment of neurological conditions of the larynx, benign and malignant conditions of the vocal folds, vocal fold paralysis, airway reconstruction and swallowing disorders. I’m also is particularly interested in endoscopic and office-based approaches, as well as the use of laser treatment in laryngeal disorders.
Outside of my practice, I’m classically trained pianist, having performed in venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Cami Hall. I’m also a vocalist with experience in performing, recording and leading worship in my local church.
I am accompanied by my wonderful husband, Eric, a well-traveled vocalist with a background in music industry, and my lovely sons, Xander and Axel.
