Tonsillectomies for Children With Developmental Delays

Recent findings by Dr. Anthony Sheyn, head of our Pediatric ENT division, are making national headlines.

While we’ve discussed tonsillectomies before, little was previously known about how this procedure affects chilren with developmental delays.

Developmental delays are a group of conditions involving impairments in communication, motor skills, problem solving and social interactions. As Dr. Sheyn’s pioneering research illustrates, children with these differences may have unique reactions to tonsillectomies.

“This elevated risk of complications should be included in pre-operative counseling and has potential implications for pre-operative decision making and treatment plans in this high-risk population.”
–Dr. Anthony Sheyn, Chief of Otolaryngology at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
