What is endoscopy?
Endoscopy is the insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the body to observe an internal organ or tissue in detail. It can also be used to carry out other tasks including imaging and minor surgery.
Accordingly, an endoscope is the device itself used to examine the patient’s body. For example, ear endoscopy would describe using this scope to look at the patient’s ear.
What are its advantages?
An endoscopy is an incision-less procedure that allows a doctor to treat a patient without more invasive, traditional surgery.
Initially, endoscopy was adopted to examine someone’s digestive tract. For years, our cutting-edge team of sinus specialists have also used endoscopy to examine a patient’s head and neck.
But now, we’re thrilled to introduce our endoscopic ear program, led by Dr. Robert Yawn!
About Our Endoscopic Ear Program:
From our Director of Otology, Dr. Yawn:
“Endoscopes are tiny cameras that can be used to see inside small spaces within the body. Traditionally used in the nose for endoscopic sinus surgery, these minimally invasive cameras have recently been adapted to be used within the ear.
The advantages of ear endoscopy are numerous. First, it allows for increased visualization of the complex anatomy of the ear, and enables surgeons to “see around corners.”
Because of this increased visualization it allows for surgeons to perform a variety of ear surgeries through the ear canal, where traditionally a large external incision was necessary.
This “incision-less” surgical approach can be used for ear drum repair, cholesteatoma removal, prosthesis placement, and a variety of other applications.”
