In a Cinematic MRI, consecutive images of the upper airway are gathered in real-time, over approximately a 2-minute period. Strung together, these images form a “movie,” or airway motion and collapse while the patient sleeps.

This ground-breaking procedure gives a real-time look at obstructive sleep apnea in patients, leading to a clearer picture of the problem and how best to treat it.

Dr. Anthony Sheyn Pioneers Cinematic MRI in Memphis

In our Pediatric ENT division, Dr. Anthony Sheyn, is the first (and only) specialist in Memphis to adopt this cutting-edge procedure.

He explains:

The use of MRI to help identify the areas of obstruction in children with sleep apnea to give a more accurate picture of the areas that need to be addressed. In combination with Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Radiology at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, I have helped create a protocol to bring this new technology to local patients. This technique has been shown to be safe, sensitive and especially useful in children who have already undergone surgery to have their tonsils and adenoids removed.
