Dysphagia in Head & Neck Cancer Patients

Dysphagia, defined as difficulty swallowing, is a common symptom among head and neck cancer patients. As a renowned head and neck cancer specialist, Dr. M. Boyd Gillespie recently discussed dysphagia on a podcast.

Says OTO Journal:

“Dr. Gillespie served as co-chair of an expert consensus statement sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, has profound negative impact on the function, nutrition, and quality of life in more than 50% of all patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer. The co-chairs recruited experts in the field of head and neck cancer, speech-language pathology, nutrition, nursing, radiation oncology, and medical oncology to consider the latest evidence on the risk factors, treatment, prevention, and monitoring of swallowing disorders in patients with head and neck cancer. The paper which was recently published in the April edition of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will serve as a guide to best practices in the management of dysphagia for clinicians, patients, and families.”
